History & Culture Lesson: What Exactly IS a Burns Night Celebration & Dinner?
The Coastal Celtic Society will be presenting a Burns Night Celebration & Dinner on January 29, 2011 at The Mill Casino Hotel & RV Park. The event will feature a Traditional Burns’ Night Program & Food which includes entertainment by bagpipers, harpists, guitar & Scottish folk music and readings of the work of Robert Burns.
So who is Robert Burns and what is Burns Night? My curiosity got the better of me so I turned to Google. I learned that Robert Burns is a Scottish Poet/Songwriter and cultural icon whose best known work is Auld Lang Syne- a New Years song tradition for most of us:
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
Robert Burns was born in 1759 and died at the age of 37 when his health began to fail. To honor him, his friends began to host a Burns Night Supper to celebrate his life and poetry around the time of his birthday- January 25. This tradition eventually grew and today Burns suppers are a tradition in Scotland and Northern Ireland…and here on the Oregon Coast.
So celebrate your Scottish roots by attending the Coastal Celtic Society Burns Night Supper on Saturday January 29 at the Mill Casino Hotel & RV Park. 5pm – 11pm. Tickets are $35 (includes entertainment and food) on sale at KoKwel Gifts. Call 541-756-8800 for more information
