Regional Nature & South Slough National Estuarine

This can be enjoyed throughout the bay, beaches and South slough Estuary. South Slough Estuary provides miles and miles of paddle tours and even host a monthly outing where they guide you through the waterways found on this research estuary, the only one of its kind in the State. South Slough also provides public restrooms and a gift shop as well as educational information and classes year round. The parking lot is limited, but there are plenty of side roads where you can park and various launch points for kayakers. There are 2 hour, half day and all day walking trails as well.

Lessons from Rikki Phelan of North Wind Kite Company provides seasonal lessons for the novice/beginner. Lessons take place at Horsfall Beach & Bastendorff Beach depending on wind direction and season. All lessons take place on the ground. 541-266-7230.
Favorable places to kiteboard on your own, Bastendorff Beach, Empire Boat Launch (for the seasoned kiteboarder only due to obstacles), Whiskey run beach - a favorite of kiteboarders of all levels, and throughout Coos Bay.

With a jagged coastline and giant waves, surfing in Oregon rivals some of the best spots in the world. The water is cool, so it’s essential to wear a wetsuit. Bastendorff Beach County Park hosts multiple surfers when the waves are up and the wind is down. Rain isn't a reason not to surf here.
Tow-in surfing, a new type of surfing that puts boards behind motorized watercraft, tows surfers out to waves otherwise unreachable. Described as an awesome rush of adrenaline, it is highly recommended that surfers take a lesson before undertaking this adventure. Surfer or non-surfer, come watch the action.
Always be cautious when surfing and check Surf Reports before going out. Lighthouse Beach and Bastendorff Beach are our most recommended locations for surfing. Conditions and level of expertise required are dependent on surf conditions. Be sure to check www.noaa.gov for the most current reports. For those that need help interpreting reports, please call Waxer’s Surf Skate Shop at 541.266.9020. Click here for information on rentals and lessons.

The area is one of the best locations you could come to for scuba diving in the Pacific Northwest, due to the variety of scuba diving offered. Even off-shore we prove we are Oregon’s Adventure Coast.
