Here on Oregon’s Adventure Coast, we have a number of local “gems” we love to brag about. One such gem is the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve- our local Oregon Coast Spotlight this month.
The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (South Slough NERR) is a 5,000 acre natural area located south of Charleston, Oregon, and encompasses a mixture of open water channels, tidal and freshwater wetlands, riparian areas, and forested uplands. There are numerous activities for the whole family to enjoy throughout the year such as
- A Fun and Interactive Visit to the South Slough Interpretive Center
- Educational Activities and Programs- see their Spring 2011 Events
- Hiking and Paddling trails!
Just to clarify, an estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of water with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea (Thanks Wikipedia!) and a watershed is a geographic area in which all sources of water, including lakes, rivers, estuaries, wetlands, and streams, as well as ground water, drain to a common surface water body.
This local gem also hosts regular workshops for the public and coordinates research, education, and stewardship programs which serve to enhance a scientific and public understanding of estuaries and contribute to improved estuarine management.
