Everyone knows that getting out on the water is a great way to connect to nature, but what if we said you could also get in a full-body workout and improve your balance all while having fun out on the water? Let us introduce you to stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP for short , and Oregon’s Adventure Coast: Coos Bay, North Bend, Charleston has several great spots to choose from. You just have to know where to look. Here are some of the best local spots for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).

SOUTH SLOUGH NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE

Embarking on a SUP tour of the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve , a protected area of land and estuary in Charleston, offers an opportunity like no other. As you glide through the calm water, take in the sights of the many birds that utilize this beautiful area including Bald Eagles, Osprey, Great Blue Herons, Egrets and Belted Kingfishers. The tides are great in this estuary so plan to ride the ebbing and flowing tides to make this paddle a little easier.

SUNSET BAY STATE PARK

Situated in one of the most scenic areas on the Oregon coast, Sunset Bay State Park features beautiful sandy beaches protected by towering sea cliffs. Day-use and picnic facilities are located along the bay to allow easy access for paddleboarders as well as beachcombing, fishing, swimming, and kayaking. Only a short walk from the beach, the campground has sites for tent camping and RV’s, as well as cozy and comfortable yurts.

TENMILE LAKE

Just 15 miles north of Coos Bay, you will find approximately 2,000 acres of calm, picturesque water surrounded by mountains and lush natural beauty. Tenmile Lake in Lakeside, is the 4th largest lake in the state of Oregon and is made up of North Tenmile Lake and South Tenmile Lake. Combined, the Tenmile Lakes offer a picturesque setting for a SUP adventure. In addition to a swimming and wading area, the lakes have multiple boat ramps, a fishing dock, ample parking, picnic tables, and more.
