If you want to feel like you have the Oregon Coast to yourself, Cape Arago State Park , the unsung hero of the Cape Arago Beach Loop, is where you want to be. It is usually quieter than its popular sister parks, Sunset Bay State Park and Shore Acres State Park , but make no mistake, Cape Arago State Park is a must-see destination! At the same time, parents and curious adults enjoy vibrant aquariums, fascinating displays of marine fossils, and up-close views of whale skeletons. With working fishing boats gliding by just outside, it’s the perfect place to learn how coastal ecosystems and local communities are connected, making it both a fun and meaningful stop for visitors of all ages.
The towns of Coos Bay, North Bend, and Charleston don’t just sit on the Oregon coast; they’ve shaped Oregon’s South Coast. Take a self-guided walking tour and discover the rich history of our towns, including the logging and maritime industries that once thrived on the West Coast, as well as the Indigenous people like the Coquille Indian Tribe and the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians who have inhabited the land for thousands of years. Look for historic buildings, street murals, and plaques that tell the stories of the people who built this place.
While you’re out exploring, be sure to stop by the Coos History Museum for a deeper understanding of our region. A trip to the Coos Art Museum, the only dedicated art museum on the Oregon coast, will not disappoint; with rotating exhibits featuring Pacific Northwest artists, it’s a cultural stop worth carving out time for.
